Sherlock Holmes

Robert Downey Jr portrays Sherlock Holmes as an intellectually gifted man with high functioning Autism.

Holmes genius and Autism are as absurdly obvious as in Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal of the Mark Zuckerberg character in The Social Network.

But there is an important difference.

Perspectives

The Social Network suffers from the same handicap as history.

  • It records the outcome of events
  • Without showing (all of) the real causes of those events

The Director of Sherlock Holmes gives us a glimpse into the inner workings of the mind of the great detective.

We get to see the why and the how, not just the what, through the combination of:

  • Slow motion
  • Rerun
  • Holmes own narrative
  • Cinematography that allows us to see and hear as Holmes does

This scene, from the first movie, shows Holmes incredible powers of observation.

  • He demonstrates a knowledge of the concept of social diplomacy
  • But this quickly evaporates as his diatribe unfolds

This scene, from the second movie, demonstrates Holmes ferocious intellect.
