Mary and Max – animated #AutismMovie

Clay-animation, black comedy-drama film (2009)

The 20 year story of 2 unlikely pen friends, begins in the mid 70s before personal computers, let alone email!

  • Their relationship is sustained entirely by letter correspondence

In Australia, Mary Daisy Dinkle is the only child of an alcoholic mother and a father with clear Asperger traits

  • Mary is friendless, lonely but intelligent with an inquiring mind
  • She finds Max’s name in a New York phone book at her local Library

In New York City, Max Horowitz is a solitary character, struggling with depression, anxiety and obesity.

  • Max writes to Mary about the struggles and challenges of living with these conditions
  • Eventually Max is formally diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome
  • In subsequent letters, Max explains how this affects his perception of and responses to the World

Here’s a short trailer of the movie.

I’ve always wanted to see this movie but it somehow slipped off my radar — thanks for the reminder (and the YouTube link!). 🙂
