The Complete Guide to #Asperger’s Syndrome

In the words of Dr. Temple Grandin:

‘An encyclopedia on Asperger’s Syndrome, written in easy to read, non-technical language.’

Dr. Tony Attwood, manages to present almost every aspect of Autism, with the possible exception of stimming, in fine detail.

He keeps the information understandable and interesting, over the entire 360 pages of text.

  • Written in a very disarmingly sympathetic style

I have lost count of the number of people I have heard describing this book as the ‘Asperger’s Bible’

  • This is certainly my opinion

The book focuses on the social and cognitive aspects of Asperger’s Syndrome as well as the common co-morbid ‘disorders’ such as:

  • Social anxiety disorder
  • OCD
  • Post traumatic stress disorder
  • School refusal
  • Selective mutism
  • Depression

There is a 20 page FAQ section and an 8 page ‘Resources’ section including:

  • Books: reference, Social stories, biography, autobiography, fiction
  • Computer software: learning about emotions and reading faces
  • DVD: diagnostics seminar
  • CBT programs
  • Websites

The book also lists the full diagnostic criteria of both DSM IV and Gillberg.

This book is as comprehensive on the Autistic experience as A Field Guide to Earthlings is about Neurotypical social communication.

I would mark both books as a must read.
